In conjunction with Barbara Haber’s talk on March 9th, we will be having a member dinner on Sunday, March 10th!
One of the least understood cuisines of South Asia is that of the Philippines, which mixes indigenous ideas from the islands with techniques borrowed from the Spanish, Chinese, Muslim traders, and other cultures. There are many Filipino restaurants in Los Angeles, but most do a poor job of presenting and explaining this cuisine to outsiders. We have found one in East Hollywood that has a fluent owner with abundant historical knowledge, and he will be our guide at a feast the day after Barbara Haber’s talk on Americans in Southeast Asia during World War II.
The menu is as follows:
Starters: Lumpia Shanghai (Filipino eggrolls) and Filipino empanadas
Salads: Sariwang lumpia – crepe filled with heart of palm, chicken, pork, peanuts, shrimp, jicama, and vegetables
Entrees:
Lechon – whole charcoal-roasted pig
Beef Mechado – Beef and pork strips braided together, marinated in vinegar, calamansi juice, and spices, then braised.
Chicken Inasal – Chicken marinated in ginger, coconut vinegar, annatto, and garlic.
Gintaang na Gulay – vegetables with crab and coconut milk
Steamed rice
Dessert buffet – rice cakes, purple yam, and other Filipino desserts
Beverages: Coffee, tea, calamansi juice with honey, and Filipino sodas
Cost: $35.00, including dinner, tax, and modest tip, or $36.00 if paid via credit card/PayPal.
To reserve a space and receive further information, send an email to richard@richardfoss.com. Space is limited and reservations are required.
